Liberia Snatche Late Equalizer to Draw with Togo
In a dramatic finish to their first match of the 2025 AFCON qualifiers, the Lone Star managed to secure a 1-1 draw against Togo in Lome on 6 September, thanks to a late goal from William Gibson.
The encounter at the Stade de Kegue in Lome saw Togo take the lead in the 79th minute with a well-placed strike from Ahoueke Denkey. The goal was a testament to Togo’s persistent pressure and attacking prowess throughout the game.
However, Liberia refused to be beaten. As the clock ticked towards the final whistle, forward William Gibson, who was introduced in the 71st minute, found the back of the net in stoppage time (90+2), delivering a powerful header from a long throw.
The goal was Gibson’s first goal for the Lone Star in four appearances.
Both teams displayed strong performances, with Liberia showing resilience and determination to equalize despite Togo’s dominant play. The draw reflects the competitive nature of the Lone Star as they look ahead to their upcoming fixtures in Group E.
Liberia will take on Algeria on Tuesday, 10 September, at the SKD Sports Complex in Paynesville.
Algeria are top of the group after a 2-0 win against Equatorial Guinea in their first match.
